Dominican College Sion Hill - Dublin

Sion Hill was founded by the Dominican Sisters in 1836. It was in a suburban villa, which they called Sion Hill because of rare shrubs brought by its owners from the Holy Land. In the beginning, the school catered for 40 day pupils, 8 boarders and 10 nuns. By 1950, this had increased to 120 day pupils and 130 boarders. The boarding school closed in the late 1960s and the school now caters for 350 day pupils.
Sion Hill is a community of students, teachers, parents and Dominican sisters whose aim is to provide our students with experiences which will help them to discover and develop their talents so that they will become positive and mature individuals. The purpose of all our programmes and structures is to ensure that our students have opportunities to develop academically, spiritually, physically, emotionally and socially.
We recognise that education is not only about academic achievement, important though that may be. It is vitally important that each student’s total experience of school is positive – her academic work, her friendships with fellow students, her interaction with teaching staff and ancilliary staff, her involvement in extra-curricular activities and her experience of the school environment. All these aspects of school life are geared towards ensuring students are happy and fulfilled in school, that they discover their talents, that they build up their confidence and that support is given to those who are experiencing difficulties.
Our Concert Hall, dating back to 1928, has been recently refurbished and is now equipped with ‘state of the art’ sound and lighting systems. The official re-opening was performed by President Mary McAleese. Download Commemorative Programme.
